A testimony of faithfulness in the valley.

Valley Light was born in the middle of a story we never would have chosen.

We are Shannon and Tyler Nelson. Our story began with friendship in 2006, grew into love in 2009, and became a marriage in 2012. Together, we built a family, walked through extraordinary trials, experienced God’s provision in ways we could never explain, and learned that faith is not simply trusting God for the outcome we want. It is trusting Him with our lives, no matter the outcome.

In 2015, Tyler suffered a traumatic brain injury following what began as a routine blood draw. He sustained a skull fracture, brain hemorrhage, and frontal lobe brain bleed and was care flighted to Dallas for specialized care. Doctors warned us about what his future might hold. There were moments when the circumstances seemed impossible, yet God continued to make a way. Doors opened that seemed firmly closed. Provision came when we did not know where it would come from. Tyler recovered in ways doctors never expected.

We learned early that God is faithful in the valley.

Then, in 2024, just three weeks after the birth of our third child, Miller, our family entered another valley. Tyler was diagnosed with stage 4 gastric cancer after months of unexplained pain.

We prayed for healing. We believed God could heal him. We trusted Him to do what only He could do.

For the next eighteen months, we walked through chemotherapy, clinical trials, hospitalizations, complications, parenting, work, exhaustion, fear, and moments of extraordinary grace. There were days filled with uncertainty and days filled with an inexplicable peace that could only come from God.

On May 10, 2026, Tyler went home to be with Jesus.

Our prayer had been for healing on this side of heaven. God answered differently than we hoped.

But He never stopped being good.

He never stopped being faithful.

He never left us.

And He never wasted the valley.

Tyler’s life and death have changed the way we understand faith. We have learned that God's faithfulness is not proven by giving us the ending we ask for. His faithfulness is found in His presence through every part of the story. He is faithful when He heals. He is faithful when He carries us. He is faithful when the answer is yes, and He is faithful when the answer is no.

His plans are still good, even when we cannot understand them.

That is the testimony behind Valley Light.

What began as a way to share our family’s story has become something much bigger. Valley Light is becoming a ministry of testimony, encouragement, and hope for people walking through their own valleys.

We believe there are countless people living in places of suffering that few others can see. Caregivers carrying impossible weight. Parents raising young children while navigating a terminal or long-term illness. Families facing sudden loss. Spouses learning how to keep going after the person they love is gone. People praying for miracles while also trying to surrender their lives to God’s will.

We want them to know they are not alone.

We want to share what we have learned.

We want to point people back to Jesus.

Because there is light in the valley.

Not because the valley is easy. Not because every story ends the way we hope. Not because we always understand what God is doing.

There is light because He is there.

Through Valley Light, we share our testimony, encourage those walking through suffering, and create opportunities for people to encounter the hope of Christ. Our hats and merchandise have traveled into hospitals, hospice rooms, prayer walks, golf courses, mission trips, and everyday conversations around the world. What started as a simple expression of faith has become a way for people to start conversations, share their stories, and point one another toward Jesus.

And we believe this is only the beginning.

The loss of Tyler did not end the story. It changed the story.

Now, Valley Light carries a deeper purpose. We want to use what God has entrusted to us, including the hardest parts of our story, to serve others who find themselves in places they never expected to be.

Our hope is that someone who feels forgotten will feel seen.

That someone who is exhausted will find encouragement.

That someone questioning God's goodness will discover His presence.

That someone who has lost everything will discover that Christ is still enough.

And ultimately, that people will come to know Jesus.

If God can use our story to bring even one person closer to Him, then every hard mile was worth it.

Isaiah 58:8 says:

“Then your light will break forth like the dawn, and your healing will quickly appear; then your righteousness will go before you, and the glory of the Lord will be your rear guard.”
